چکیده

Pulsar radio emission is modelled as a sum of two completely polarized non-orthogonal modes with the randomly varying Stokes parameters and intensity ratio. The modes are the result of polarization evolution of the original natural waves in the hot magnetized weakly inhomogeneous plasma of pulsar magnetosphere. In the course of wave mode coupling, the linearly polarized natural waves acquire purely orthogonal elliptical polarizations. Further on, as the waves pass through the cyclotron resonance, they become non-orthogonal. The pulse-to-pulse fluctuations of the final polarization characteristics and the intensity ratio of the modes are attributed to the temporal fluctuations in the plasma flow. The model suggested allows to reproduce the basic features of the one-dimensional distributions of the individual-pulse polarization characteristics. Besides that, propagation origin of pulsar polarization implies a certain correlation between the mode ellipticity and position angle. On a qualitative level, for different sets of parameters, the expected correlations appear compatible with the observed ones. Further theoretical studies are necessary to establish the quantitative correspondence of the model to the observational results and to develop a technique of diagnostics of pulsar plasma on this basis.

Nature of giant pulses in radio pulsars

Formation of giant radio pulses is attributed to propagation effects in the plasma of pulsar magnetosphere. Induced scattering of radio waves by the plasma particles is found to lead to an efficient redistribution of the radio emission in frequency. With the steep spectrum of pulsar radiation, intensity transfer between the widely spaced frequencies may imply significant narrow-band amplificati...

Propagation effects in pulsar magnetospheres

Refraction and polarization transfer in an ultrarelativistic highly magnetized pulsar plasma are considered. Normal waves in the pulsar plasma are linearly polarized however circular polarization arises in the polarization limiting region if radiation propagates at an angle to the plane of the magnetic field lines. The rays go off this plane due to refraction or (and) due to rotation of the mag...

ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS Simultaneous single-pulse observations of radio pulsars II. Orthogonal polarization modes in PSR B1133+16

In this paper, we present a study of orthogonal polarization modes in the radio emission of PSR B1133+16, conducted within the frame of simultaneous, multi-frequency, single-pulse observations. Simultaneously observing at two frequencies (1.41 GHz and 4.85 GHz) provides the means to study the bandwidth of polarization features such as the polarization position angle. We find two main results. F...

Our high time resolution observations of individual pulses from the Crab pulsar show that the main pulse and interpulse differ in temporal behavior, spectral behavior, polarization and dispersion. The main pulse properties are consistent with one current model of pulsar radio emission, namely, soliton collapse in strong plasma turbulence. The high-frequency interpulse is quite another story. It...

Optical Pulse Polarization of the Crab Pulsar

The strong optical emission of the Crab pulsar allows us to study the polarization properties in detail. Optical pulsed emission can best be understood as synchrotron radiation of relativistic electron-positron pairs in the outer magnetosphere. We calculate the polarization properties of the optical pulses based on the outer gap model, which has explained much of the observed properties of this...
